COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Fort Smith Police Department will host Storytime at the Main Library on Oct. 28 at 4 PM — children will hear books that teach safety. The monthly event aims to build strong ties between police and local families.  City of Fort Smith

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Arkansas Minority Health Commission is hosting a community health fair Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Smith in partnership with the local NAACP branch and Baptist Health, offering free health screenings and information while flu shots and COVID vaccinations will cost for those without insurance. The event will be renamed in honor of the late Dr. Harry P. McDonald.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Mercy was named the top large health system for patient experience by NRC Health for the fourth year based on patient feedback collected April 1 to March 31. Locally, Mercy Fort Smith completed a $186 million expansion of its emergency and intensive care units and broke ground on a new $55 million cancer center.  Southwest Times Record

SPORTS NEWS

  • Rogers Heritage junior quarterback Braedon Carroll earned player of the week honors after running for three touchdowns and throwing for one in the War Eagles' 41-40 overtime win against Fort Smith Northside. Coach Eric Munoz said he jokes with Carroll about the bruises he may suffer during games (showing his confidence in the player's toughness).  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
