  • Community leaders and local organizations met Wednesday night in Fort Smith to discuss food insecurity that affects nearly 20% of Sebastian County residents and 25% of children—organizers stressed the need for policy actions and increased donations to assist local families in need.  5 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Fort Smith Police officers will join other Arkansas agencies next week for the State Distracted Driving Mobilization from October 19 to 25 to enforce laws against using phones while driving so roads stay safe.  City of Fort Smith

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kendrix Holcomb, an admissions advisor at UAFS, reinvented himself after arriving as a student and now works to boost student confidence. He joined campus groups early on and travels across eastern and southern Arkansas to share his journey — his experience shows that stepping out of one's comfort zone can lead to growth.  University of Arkansas Fort Smith
  • The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith will host Den Day on Thursday, Nov. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.—the event lets high school juniors, seniors and transfer students explore academic programs, tour facilities and meet faculty through new Academic Sessions.  University of Arkansas Fort Smith
  • Representatives from UAFS will visit the UACC Morrilton campus from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct 22 to discuss transfer options for students and provide a free lunch for those learning about academic pathways and financial aid programs — including the Smart Choice Tuition Waiver.  University of Arkansas Fort Smith

  • At Tuesday’s Greenwood School Board meeting—where board members reviewed the school’s annual progress and discussed plans to buy athletic and learning equipment—the report highlighted recent successes.   • The City of Fort Smith announced that South M Street between Old Greenwood and S 34th Street will be closed from 7 a.m. until 12 p.m. on October 18 for Survivors' Challenge Weekend 2025 + drivers should use alternate routes.  City of Fort Smith

SPORTS NEWS

  • Junior outside hitter Rachel Settle led Fort Smith Southside to a season sweep of Fort Smith Northside on Tuesday night during the Battle of Rogers Avenue at Southside Arena—her strong play helped secure the win.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • UAFS volleyball swept Arkansas-Monticello at the Stubblefield Center on Tuesday with sets of 25—20, 25—17, and 25—11—Middle Crystal Smith blocked four balls while Bree Pardy led with 12 digs. UAFS women’s golf finished sixth at the Midwest Classic with a total score of 903 and the basketball team will host its Tip-Off Dinner on October 24 at The Bakery District with an open practice the next morning at 9 a.m.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Ozark Hillbillies won a 36-28 game in double overtime at Mena on Friday night—coach Josh Watson said key defensive stops sealed the win. The team will host Pottsville this week.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
