COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A ribbon-cutting ceremony will open Carol Ann Cross Park on October 17th at 10:00 a.m.—officials will unveil an inclusive playground and an improved walking trail with a boardwalk/pier at 1601 S 74th St. The event will highlight key park upgrades for local residents.  City of Fort Smith
  • Fort Smith residents can enjoy a variety of events in the River Valley from today through September 28 — including the returning Arkansas-Oklahoma State Fair at the Fairgrounds and theater performances at the Little Theatre. Additional activities include a picnic at Alma Community Center, library programs for all ages, and art exhibits at the Regional Art Museum.  5 News
  • Fort Smith Police Department will host Storytime at the Main Library (3201 Rogers Ave) on Sept. 30 at 4:00 p.m. to share children’s books that teach safety lessons.  City of Fort Smith
  • The Fort Smith Police Department will hold a free active shooter training class on Tuesday, September 30 at 6 PM at 100 South 10th Street—participants will learn the Run, Hide, Fight method and hear from a survivor with real experience.  City of Fort Smith

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fort Smith residents will soon share their ideas with city officials during the KnowYourCity event — a forum for voicing concerns about the city's direction.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • On Monday, ICE agents and former advisor Joe Profiri were seen at the Franklin County prison site when Deputy Sheriff Jon Little stopped them at the gate. Gov. Sanders is pushing a plan that may use ICE funds to build a temporary detention center first and then a permanent prison—local officials worry the plan may have problems with power, water and roads.  Arkansas Times
