COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Christmas Honors events in Fort Smith are set to begin on Dec 5 with a wreath workshop at the Convention Center Hall C and continue on Dec 6 with a ceremony at the National Cemetery. Organizers—who started the program in 2009—are asking for volunteers, truck drivers, and donations to help place wreaths on over 16,000 headstones and complete tasks through early January.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sebastian County’s Quorum Court will vote on a new $1.75 million pay policy for county employees Tuesday in Fort Smith—this vote is expected to adjust employee compensation.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • The Fort Smith Board of Directors will meet on Tuesday to consider a proposal for the city to take over operations and maintenance of the Rose Lawn/Holy Cross, Forest Park, and Washington cemeteries with a nearly $1 million startup cost — officials expect to discuss further details at the meeting.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Gov. Sanders announced on Sept. 19th that negotiations with insurers reduced the proposed ACA premium hikes for 2026 by 35.8%, saving money for about 308K residents — new rates for six plans from Centene and Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield will take effect Jan. 1st.  Southwest Times Record

SPORTS NEWS

  • A nationwide bull riding and bullfighting tour will end with a bang this Friday in Natural Dam as the final stop on the Spurs + Cleats Tour in Crawford County, offering extreme competitions in both events.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • The UAFS volleyball team ended a 3-0 weekend at the Harding Invitational in Searcy by beating Crowley's Ridge College 3-1 on Saturday — they also swept Southwest Baptist and defeated Southern Arkansas with key plays from Pardy and Smith. The Lions will begin MIAA play Thursday at Newman at 6 p.m.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
