COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pilots will gather for the second annual Arklahoma STOL Competition at Patriot Airpark in Pocola this Friday and Saturday, where a practice run and a career day for 40 schools will also take place with food and music. Spectators will watch pilots take off and land in very short distances—tickets cost $20 for adults and free for kids.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Two Walks to End Alzheimer’s in Fort Smith and Rogers will raise funds and support care programs for Arkansans with dementia — the Fort Smith event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept 20 at 9 a.m. at the Arkansas Colleges of Health Education while the Rogers event will be held on Oct 11 at Village on the Creeks.  5 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bingo Loco is a touring interactive performance game that will visit Fort Smith on Oct. 17—bringing a unique entertainment event to local audiences. The game is part of its tour and will offer a hands-on experience for the community.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • MacKenzie Maddry, a 19-year-old cancer and heart failure survivor — who beat osteosarcoma and underwent a heart transplant — is set to appear in a new Hallmark movie called 'The More the Merrier' with other heart pump recipients and NFL player Damar Hamlin. The film's air date will be announced on Sept. 17.  5 News

  • The Arkansas Advanced Energy Foundation will host a free forum in Fort Smith on Tuesday — the event aims to build a skilled workforce for the energy industry.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

  • City directors in Fort Smith will consider a resolution Tuesday to use eminent domain to secure temporary construction easements—landowners must accept the city's offered payments or the city will act.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

  • 5NEWS and Yarnell's Premium Ice Cream have launched the Sweetest Play contest featuring four nominated high school football plays from Friday night games—voters have until Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 3 p.m. to vote and the winning team will receive a $200 donation for its booster club.  5 News
  • The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith volleyball team earned its third sweep on Saturday, beating Auburn-Montgomery 3 to 0 with set scores of 25 to 15, 25 to 11, and 25 to 15 at the Reddie-Tiger Invitational in Arkadelphia.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
