  • Residents in Fort Smith can look forward to weekend events in the River Valley from September 5 to 7—ranging from the Farmers Market downtown and outdoor activities at the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center to book clubs and scavenger hunts at Miss Lauren's Brothel Museum with additional shows at local venues.  5 News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fort Smith Police responded to a vehicle injury accident near 4700 Midland Blvd that caused heavy traffic delays until the scene was cleared—residents are advised to use alternate routes.  City of Fort Smith

CRIME NEWS

  • A Van Buren woman pleaded guilty to robbery after she agreed to trade a sex act for $100–then used a gun to take money from a man; she received a 20-year prison sentence, credit for time served, and was ordered to pay $400 in restitution.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • A Greenwood woman, 34-year-old Dara Masterson, was arrested after she allegedly ran over her husband on Sunday evening on White Lane—she faces charges of domestic battery and DWI with a $10,000 bond while her husband, airlifted to Little Rock, is now stable.  4029 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Mexican Standoff—a band of four Mexican-American women—will perform at 6 p.m. on Sept. 25 at the Harry E. Kelley River Park Amphitheater to open the Fall Levitt AMP Music Series. The series will run through Oct. 23 and offers free parking for all attendees.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Arkansas Fort Smith signed a three-year affiliation agreement on Aug. 25 with Arkansas Colleges of Health Education that will guarantee pre-med students who meet required scores and GPA a chance for an admissions interview. The plan aims to keep skilled health care professionals in the River Valley—helping to meet growing local needs.  4029 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The section of the future Interstate 49 from Barling in Sebastian County to Y City in Scott County moves to the next phase of project development as the Arkansas Department of Transportation begins field surveys this fall. The survey work will use an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to map terrain, utilities, drainage features and property corners for design plans.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
