CRIME NEWS

  • Fort Smith Police responded to a shooting near 1700 Savannah Street after a vehicle with several people was abandoned near the end of Vicksburg and South 35th Street — no one was hurt and police are asking for tips.  City of Fort Smith

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith added 25 new full-time faculty members for the 2025-26 academic year to strengthen academic programs across three colleges. Two new employees joined the Boreham Library staff—expanding student support.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Students at UAFS competed in an Iron Chef-inspired instant ramen contest on August 22, where five teams crafted unique dishes in 30 minutes. The winning team earned bragging rights—signing a stuffed package of instant ramen as its event mascot.  University of Arkansas Fort Smith

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction began on the I-49 Arkansas River bridge near Fort Smith-Barling to connect I-49 from Kansas City to New Orleans by 2029. State and federal funds back the project - built with Arkansas products and local labor - and when complete it will provide a safer route for drivers.  Southwest Times Record
  • Fort Smith's Board of Directors will meet today at 6 p.m. at Blue Lion to review a 10-year capital improvement plan that would spend over $250M to fix streets, drainage, and water systems and to hear updates on 2026 service objectives from 24 city departments — including plans to upgrade water lines and add detention ponds at the May Branch drainage basin.  Southwest Times Record

HEALTH NEWS

  • Blue Bell Creameries recalled some Moo-llennium Crunch ice cream on Aug 22 because the wrong label left nuts like almonds, walnuts, and pecans undeclared—posing a risk to those with nut allergies in Arkansas and 15 other states.
