CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Fort Smith police responded to a shooting on South 17th Street at 4:20 a.m. Sunday that left a victim with non-life-threatening injuries — detectives now continue their investigation. River Valley Democrat-Gazette
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Teachers at Lincoln Middle School are preparing classrooms for students returning today; teacher Tyler McBride (who still feels butterflies on the first day) and teacher Ashtyn Brewer (who advised it is okay to make mistakes in math) say authenticity and positivity can inspire students. 4029 News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Fort Smith said residents must continue to save water after an Aug. 3 water main break near Phoenix and Leigh avenues lowered reservoir levels and storage tanks. Officials noted that although water pressure is back to normal, tanks remain low — delaying the lift of the restrictions. River Valley Democrat-Gazette
- ➤ Sebastian County announced a fall cleanup campaign that will offer public trash disposal sites every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting Sept. 13 through Oct. 11. The campaign will take place at five sites—Midland, Greenwood, Jenny Lind, Milltown and Lavaca—and county residents must show ID and bag their household trash; each site will also feature an e-waste trailer for electronics. - ➤ City officials said that mandatory Phase II water conservation measures remain in effect after a water main break lowered reservoir levels last week. The rules allow watering shrubs, plants, trees, and gardens every other day and ban watering lawns — residents must turn off automated systems to help the reservoirs refill. City of Fort Smith
- ➤ A street closure has been approved for the area of Riverfront Dr. and N. P St to Ballman and N P St (for work on replacing the draining system) and will remain in effect until September 9. City of Fort Smith
