COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community Rescue Mission held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Miller Cottages project - three affordable duplexes built with funds from a $90,000 grant will provide six housing units adjacent to its current transitional shelter. Construction will begin in August and take nine months, and families will pay rent based on their income until they move to permanent housing.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

  • Fort Smith Police Department is investigating a burglary on the 1600 block of Towson Ave where security footage from 5:36 a.m. on August 3 shows a suspect with a tattoo reading 'Together' on his forearm—detectives are gathering more evidence and ask anyone with tips to call 479-709-5000.  City of Fort Smith

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today the Fort Smith International Film Festival and MidAmerica Film Market began with a screening of 'In the Footsteps of Darby: A General’s Journey' at 6:30 p.m. at the Fort Smith Museum of History with a Q&A at 7:30 p.m. The festival will run until Saturday and show 160 films and host workshops—spotlighting local filmmakers and the city’s ties with Cisterna, Italy.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fort Smith School District officials announced Tuesday that they will offer identity theft protection to employees for one year after a July cyberattack potentially accessed backup files on individual servers—officials said there is no evidence that data from eSchool or eFinance was breached and that more details will be provided.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • 40/29 News interviewed Arkansas superintendents ahead of the new school year — in Fort Smith, Superintendent Martin Mahan said the district will open a clinic at Darby Middle School while other districts discussed safety upgrades and a five-day schedule.  4029 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Emergency water conservation measures remained in effect Tuesday after a 24-inch water main broke near Phoenix and Leigh avenues on Sunday. Repairs have been completed but pressure testing and disinfection continue, and officials said residents must limit water use until further notice.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Crews fixed the 24-inch water main break along Leigh Avenue, but water conservation measures remain for Fort Smith residents and those south of the Arkansas River including Barling, Franklin, Sebastian counties and Arkoma. Officials ban nonessential water uses such as lawn irrigation, car washing, pool filling and cleaning exterior surfaces and warn storage tanks may take days or weeks to refill.  4029 News
