  • Community Rescue Mission will break ground on Miller Cottages, a transitional housing project for local families experiencing homelessness, at 10 a.m. Monday at 505 N. 4th St.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fort Smith Police responded at 9:23 a.m. on August 1st to a vehicle-pedestrian accident near Rogers and North Greenwood Avenues that caused non-life-threatening injuries (with traffic delays expected as the scene was cleared).  City of Fort Smith

CRIME NEWS

  • An appeals court ruling sent the excessive force lawsuit back to district court for individual review of three Sebastian County Sheriff's Office deputies accused of using force in a 2020 incident with a driver having a medical condition—each deputy now faces separate scrutiny as the case moves forward.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State officials announced that auctions of tax-delinquent properties in the River Valley raised over $1.3 million—51 of 53 parcels sold in one event and 44 of 45 in another. The auctions offered properties with taxes delinquent since 2020 and will allow unsold parcels to be redeemed online after 30 days.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Two nurse practitioners, Drake Lee and Kourtney Surber, joined Baptist Health Family Clinic-Alma to work with Dr. Jeffrey Medlock in offering care to patients across Crawford County. They bring strong backgrounds—Lee worked at Arkansas Children's Hospital and Surber has nearly a decade of nursing experience—to help provide wellness exams, treatment for illness, and preventive care.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Fort Smith Marshals defeated Joplin 5-1 on Friday at Crowder Field by scoring three early runs with key hits from Schilling, Callahan, and McCoy—Joplin managed only one run in the sixth. Pitchers Waters and Brown helped limit Joplin’s offense, and the series continues at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
