Good morning, Fort Smith.
Arkansas residents can shop tax-free during the tax break that runs from August 2 to August 3.
The sale covers school supplies, computers and clothing costing $100 or less — it does not include jewelry, handbags and sports equipment.
The University of Arkansas—Fort Smith has been awarded over $2.7 million in renewed grant funds for its TRIO Student Support Services and TRIO STEM programs, with each program receiving $1,361,820 to support nearly 300 eligible students annually as funding begins Sept.
1. DeJon Jordan was named TRIO STEM director on July 8 and will lead efforts to expand support for bachelor’s students in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and health sciences.
The Fort Smith Board of Directors unanimously approved a resolution on Tuesday to settle a federal lawsuit by a former employee who claimed discrimination—alleging civil rights and ADA violations—with a $9,500 payment, a decision made after a detailed review of the case.
The move finalizes the matter after concerns were raised about the alleged mistreatment.
A report by Hawkins-Weir Engineers warned that Fort Smith’s water system is nearing its capacity and will need upgrades to treatment and transmission systems to support a proposed 3,000-bed prison that would add 562,500 gallons of daily demand.
Acting city administrator Jeff Dingman said the upgrades could take three to six years to complete after funding is secured—raising concerns that the system may be strained before the end of 2025.
Baptist Health-Fort Smith earned Gold Plus honors from the American Heart Association's Get With The Guidelines-Stroke program for following research-based stroke care protocols—helping lower stroke risks; the awards recognize the hospital’s commitment to improved outcomes in a state with high stroke rates.
