EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On July 21, a cybersecurity incident shut down phone and internet systems across the Fort Smith School District, 40/29 News confirmed. The outage came hours ahead of a school board meeting set to discuss a student cellphone ban and lunch price increase, and classes will begin Aug. 13—officials say they are working to restore service. 4029 News
- ➤ The Fort Smith School Board voted unanimously to raise school meal prices starting Aug. 1 — elementary lunches will rise from $2.75 to $3 and middle/high school lunches will go from $3 to $3.25. Students who choose a second breakfast will pay an extra 50 cents while first breakfasts remain free. 4029 News
- ➤ At UAFS, student success librarian Roxy Wylie uses her own path as a nontraditional student to help others with research and school work. - ➤ Farmers in the Arkansas Delta experienced record floods in April that ruined 600 acres of rice and delayed planting on 1,500 more acres. Climate experts say warmer air increased heavy rain intensity by 9% — making such floods more likely in the future. Arkansas Times

- ➤ South 7th Street between Parker and Wheeler Avenues will be closed from 3—9 p.m. on July 24 for Thunder in the Fort—officials approved the closure on July 21 and advise residents to plan alternate routes. City of Fort Smith

- ➤ Dr. DeJuan Daniel at CHI St. Vincent advised residents amid the heat wave to drink nearly a gallon of water daily with a pinch of Himalayan or Baja sea salt to replace lost electrolytes. He also urged people working outdoors to take frequent breaks and apply sunscreen—essential steps to reduce heat stress—and stay hydrated. 5 News
