CRIME NEWS

  • Police identified 25-year-old Hunter Harrell as the suspect in a Friday morning homicide on the 1300 block of North 38th Street in Fort Smith after officers discovered 39-year-old Jerry Beane shot dead around 4:45 a.m., and the Carroll County Sheriff's Office arrested Harrell for first-degree murder and discharging a firearm from a vehicle while a 42-year-old woman with him was taken into custody for a parole violation.  5 News
  • Fort Smith man Salvador Fautino Caracena-Zarates Jr.—the final member of a Northwest Arkansas drug trafficking organization—was sentenced on Wednesday to 25 years in federal prison and four years of supervised release after pleading guilty to possessing more than 50 grams of a methamphetamine mixture used to supply fentanyl pills.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

  • City officials in Fort Smith are exploring Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders' links to the White House to ease the city's consent decree problems — they also see the connection as a chance to tackle plans for a reliable prison water supply.   • On July 16, Director Lee Kemp requested adding an agenda item to the July 22 Executive Session to interview candidate Jason Mitchell for the Director of Internal Auditor title; four directors concurred while one opposed and one was unreachable.   • Arkansas football coach Sam Pittman told media on Thursday at SEC media days that he is confident in his job security and will work to fix the Razorbacks' turnover issues.
