CRIME NEWS

  • The Sebastian County Sheriff's Office investigated a homicide in Lavaca when officers arrived at a home off Highway 96 at 5 p.m. Thursday and found a person with gunshot wounds who was taken to a hospital but later died while investigators spoke with a person of interest and said there is no immediate threat to the public.  4029 News
  • A 17-year-old from Sebastian County was arrested in Fort Smith on June 24 for possession of child sexual abuse material and video voyeurism of a minor—after a cyber tip led authorities to his Instagram account—and was taken to the Sebastian County Juvenile Detention Center.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney Joey McCutchen, for Marilyn Moore, filed a lawsuit against the city and Acting City Administrator Jeff Dingman for not providing records on the planned Franklin County prison. The suit comes weeks after a judge ruled the city broke FOIA rules—residents worry this may affect water rates.  5 News
  • The governor's office announced Thursday that Sebastian and Scott counties received more than $735,000 for 12 rural road projects—meant to protect water quality and improve drainage. Scott County was granted $57,446 to improve a free-span bridge and Sebastian County received $49,459 to upgrade culverts—funding provided through the Arkansas Unpaved Roads Program.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • The City of Fort Smith Property Owners Appeal Board will meet Monday, July 14 at 11:00 a.m. at Blue Lion at 101 North 2nd Street—its job is to pick a new chair for 2025 to 2026 and to schedule property cleanup lien hearings—and the final board packet will be posted on the city website.  City of Fort Smith

  • Fort Smith will host a parade and block party on July 24 from 4-8 p.m. along the Bakery District and Garrison Avenue to honor former Northside High School basketball stars and NBA champions Jaylin Williams and Isaiah Joe; city officials said street closures will start at 5 p.m.-the event will feature live DJ music, food trucks, a bounce house and other activities for children.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
