  • A 57-year-old Ozark man died Friday night when his 2016 Kawasaki went out of control and overturned on Arkansas 288 at 10:49 p.m.—passenger Chrystal Daniels, 46, was injured and taken to Mercy Hospital Ozark.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • Sebastian County’s prosecutor Daniel Shue has asked for a special prosecutor to check possible criminal acts linked to a FOIA request about the city’s internal auditor hire—he said a citizen complaint, a court ruling for FOIA violations, and his conflict of interest led him to seek state help.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • A Fort Smith man was arrested after allegedly assaulting an officer — authorities say details are still pending.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • DeJon Jordan, assistant director for TRIO STEM at the University of Arkansas–Fort Smith, said he chose the role to stay close to family and support students; he will step down as Staff Senate chair at the end of June. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fort Smith’s Arkansas Climate League, led by Jo Elsken, used a $360,000 grant in 2024 to install 187 solar panels at community centers and help low-income residents lower utility costs. The nonprofit will work to expand green energy jobs for young people and faces funding challenges—while building local support amid conservative opposition.  Arkansas Times

  • Data from the International Roughness Index shows that 7% of Arkansas roads are rated poor, with nine worst roads in Northwest Arkansas and two in Fort Smith. The Hearst National Investigative Unit analysis indicates that these conditions may affect local travel.  4029 News
  • Fort Smith’s HR director Rick Lolley retired effective immediately after an executive session on April 29 over his handling of the internal auditor hiring that saw the abrupt firing of fugitive auditor Rebecca Cowan—who had a felony record from Oklahoma. City officials said the resignation came amid legal challenges including a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
