  • The Greater Fort Smith Association of Home Builders is hosting its annual Mason Barr Mock Scholarship Golf Tournament today at Ben Geren Golf Course with check in at 10 a.m. and a shotgun start at 11 a.m. — the event will raise funds for scholarships for children of member company employees while offering contests and special prizes.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Police Chief Danny Baker reported at the Blue Lion on Tuesday, May 27 that no homicides occurred in Fort Smith in 2024—he presented his annual report 'A Brighter Day' to the Board of Directors and the public.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Residents met at Creekmore Community Center to hear city officials update them on plans to cut climate pollution with a $14.5 million grant—officials are developing an energy and environment plan and are asking for community feedback.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

SPORTS NEWS

  • Chuck Davis was introduced as the new head boys basketball coach for Fort Smith Southside Mavericks on May 28, replacing Stewart Adams who resigned after six years at the helm. Davis will lead the team this season.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • On Thursday at Crowder Field, the Sherman Shadowcats rallied with four runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat the Fort Smith Marshals 6-4—after the Marshals built an early lead with a wild pitch and an error.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Coach Sam Pittman said he likes the eight-game SEC schedule—he said it helps the Razorbacks get good nonconference matchups, including a game with Notre Dame. Athletic director Hunter Yurachek said the current plan keeps the team safe for playoff chances—avoiding extra losses that could hurt their run.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
