  • Kids 18 and under in the River Valley will get free breakfast and lunch at school sites starting June 2, with meals served Monday through Friday except on a few days—low-income families can also receive $120 preloaded summer EBT cards and register for weekly meal kits from the Food 4 Kids program running June 10 to August 13.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

  • The Fort Smith Police Department responded at 4:30 a.m. on May 27th to reports of an armed subject barricaded near South Albert Pike and Rogers Avenue—officers secured the area to keep residents and motorists safe while working toward a resolution.  City of Fort Smith

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fort Kids Children's Museum will host a Construction Camp for fourth through sixth graders on June 23 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Peak Innovation Center at 5900 Painter Lane—local partners will lead hands-on construction and design activities as students build a kid-sized racetrack for a new exhibit.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 20, the Fort Smith Board of Directors voted to amend the city's zoning rules so new tobacco and vape shops cannot operate within 500 feet of schools or daycares—this change applies only to shops that open or change ownership and came after a heated debate over fairness and business rights while the board also backed state measures to raise the purchase age for hemp products.  Southwest Times Record
