CRIME NEWS

  • A Fort Smith man was arrested Sunday at about 6:30 p.m. after a non-life-threatening stabbing occurred inside Hope Campus on 301 S. E St.—32-year-old Wesley Underwood from North Sixth Street now faces one count of first degree battery and is held on a $150,000 bond.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 92nd Annual Old Fort Days Rodeo is underway in Fort Smith from May 26 to May 31 with events such as bull riding, bareback riding, and calf roping, while Monday's parade (scheduled for 10 a.m. downtown) was canceled due to rain.  5 News
  • Fort Smith’s Molly Dunaway (a single mother and foster parent) has been chosen to represent Arkansas at the Miss Worldwide pageant on July 26 in Omaha where she will promote the 100 Families program that supports families in crisis. Her mother helped create the program and Dunaway will use the event to share her personal story and call for more community support.  Southwest Times Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Fort Smith Board of Directors will hold a study session to review planned zoning district rules and listen to police and fire department updates from 2024. The police report showed a 14% drop in major crimes and zero homicides, while the fire department responded to over 15,000 calls and saved over $48 million in property value + the board will also discuss water and wastewater services for Arkoma.  Southwest Times Record
  • Memorial Day weekend marked the return of boating in the River Valley, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Little Rock District) and Arkansas Game and Fish Commission warned boaters to wear life jackets, drive slowly at launch ramps, and be patient with delays due to staffing shortages. They urged safe practices throughout the summer and promoted free boater education classes, including one at the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center in Fort Smith on June 28.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
