COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Creekmore Park Pool in Fort Smith reopens today at noon after major renovations rebuilt the bathhouse and added a new diving area—parking and the entrance are temporarily relocated for lot resurfacing while the pool operates until 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday with a senior hour from 11 a.m. to noon.  Southwest Times Record
  • Fort Smith National Cemetery will host a Memorial Day ceremony on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. rain or shine to honor over 19,000 veterans and spouses, with guest speaker Carder Ferguson and Avenue of Flags Chairman Zach Johnson highlighting military sacrifices—public attendance is encouraged. A minute of silence is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Monday to remember both the veterans and their families.  4029 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kennedy Allison, a UAFS junior, used her near-fatal cardiac arrest at Pea Ridge High School to help push for new legislation in Arkansas. The law—signed by Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders—will require every school to have a plan for cardiac emergencies by the next school year.  University of Arkansas Fort Smith
  • The University of Arkansas System Board of Trustees approved new tuition and fee rates for 2025-26, with most schools rising in the low single digits and UA-Fort Smith facing a 7.65% total increase (tuition up 11.11% for new enrollees and fees up 1.19%) to cover lost sales tax revenue and reduced state funding.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced on Thursday that the state will cover 35% of the cost to repair and rebuild infrastructure damaged by March storms while local governments bear the remaining burden. FEMA denied the request for federal public assistance, and the state will not appeal the decision—leaving cities and counties facing significant expenses.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • A hearing between local attorneys and the city was delayed Thursday due to scheduling conflicts — a dispute over materials from the April hiring and firing of an internal auditor will be heard at 1:30 p.m. on June 3 —.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
