- ➤ The beloved 93rd Annual Old Fort Days Rodeo will run from May 25 to 30 at Kay Rodgers Park (featuring a downtown parade at 10 a.m. on Memorial Day) with six nights of rodeo action and family activities. 4029 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Southside High School set a state record by awarding the Arkansas Seal of Biliteracy to 63 students for English plus 17 other languages, including first official seals for Catalan, Estonian, Thai, and Visayan. The awards ceremony was held May 4 in the school commons. Southwest Times Record
- ➤ Van Buren High School seniors Mickenzie Barnett and Addyson Moad were recognized as Arkansas Scholars by the Van Buren Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday. Barnett will study physical therapy at Arkansas Tech University-Ozark Campus while Moad will major in psychiatric mental health at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith. - ➤ On Monday, the Fort Smith School Board approved a $15 million bond package for school repairs (voted 4-1) covering roof work at Northside and Southside and improvements at Peak Innovation Center, with bonds set for issuance on Aug. 31 and funds to be used before Aug. 31, 2029. - ➤ Assistant Principal Marshal Hurst has been named the new principal at Northside High School as announced Tuesday by Fort Smith Public Schools; he served as assistant principal since 2023 and taught at the school (he also worked with the state education department) and will build on its strong tradition. - ➤ Fort Smith Police Department partners with the U.S. Department of Transportation & National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for a Click It or Ticket mobilization from May 19 to 31 to enforce seat belt laws; officers will patrol the streets to help save lives on every trip.
