  • Fort Smith police are investigating a Saturday night shooting in the 1400 block of Belle Avenue — one person was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and no arrests had been made by 11 p.m. on May 17.  5 News

  • Artist TigerSasha painted a 190-foot stretch of pavement downtown—using a Home Depot bucket of paint to create a pathway that connects two main avenues in Fort Smith.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southern New Hampshire University recently named several Fort Smith students to its dean's and president's lists based on their spring grades from January to May. Michael Beach, Grant Keju, Jeremy Beck, and Kendrick Greene made the dean's list + Payton Griffith, Walker Parham, Antoinette Bohanon, Kimberly Witt, Alexandra Henry, Travis Puckett, and Bailey Caraway reached the president's list.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • During a Tuesday study session, board members expressed dismay after learning that Arkoma owes the city $120,000 in unpaid water utility payments and said they are not considering any discount on water rates + they stressed that the debt must be resolved first.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • More than 1,300 people have visited the Cannabis and Wellness Expo at Simmons Bank Arena—an event featuring vendor booths, doctor certifications, cooking demos and a movie screening. The three-day expo began Friday and continues today until 4:20 p.m.  Arkansas Times

  • The Alma Airedales pushed back extra spring football practice because baseball extended their schedule. Coach Rusty Bush said the team is focusing on basic skills — such as tackling, catching and throwing — to prepare for summer camps and 7 on 7 tournaments.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • At the Carl Kight Invitational at Stephen F. Austin University last month, the Ouachita Baptist women’s track & field team set five school records and posted an NCAA provisional time. Former Ozark sprinter Anna Woolsey helped in two record runs + her performance boosted the team's spring track season.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
