- ➤ Arkansas 4-H in Sebastian County will host a free School’s Out Pirate Bash on May 29 for youth under 19, featuring book reading, crafts, games and STEM challenges; additional camps including a Geography Camp on July 8 and Strawberry Day on Aug. 4 are planned at local 4-H centers. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ State and local officials now lead cleanup of the chemical spill that occurred on May 2 at the 7000 block of U.S. 271 as EPA stepped back (the process continues). A website is available for residents to get updates on the cleanup. River Valley Democrat-Gazette
- ➤ Warm spring weather is bringing more pests to local homes, including winged termites and honey bees, so Fort Smith homeowners should seal cracks (especially around windows) and call a beekeeper if needed. Experts say natural predators help control termite numbers and bee swarms are generally gentle. 4029 News

- ➤ After a severe hail storm, many homes may have roof, siding and gutter damage, so residents should inspect for missing shingles, dents and leaks before starting repairs that need a building permit. - ➤ Mercy Fort Smith, Mercy Northwest Arkansas, and Washington Regional Medical Center earned an A grade for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group — joining 917 hospitals nationwide.
