  • Fort Smith Cinema will upgrade all auditoriums with recliner seating, laser projection and a new bar and grill while remaining open during renovations. The changes, announced by Malco Theatres, are expected to be finished this summer — a move that will improve the movie-going experience for local patrons.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Justice announced on Wednesday that two people were arrested in the Western District as part of Operation Restore Justice—a nationwide crackdown that rescued 115 children and led to the arrest of 205 child sexual abuse offenders; officials have not released the suspects' identities as the investigation continues.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • The fifth annual Fort Smith International Film Festival and MidAmerica Film Market has received a record-breaking 597 film submissions from over 70 countries, nations and tribes as announced Tuesday by organizers. Official selections will be announced May 31 and tickets will go on sale June 5 — the festival is set to take place Aug. 7-10.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

ECONOMY NEWS

  • During the first quarter of 2025, Arkansas casinos won nearly $183 million — a 2.86% gain from the same quarter last year — even though March's revenue was unusually low, according to the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Sarah Sanders on May 3 submitted a new request for federal disaster aid to cover storms that hit Arkansas from April 2 to 22—causing flooding, power outages in about 25,000 households, and three deaths. She seeks funds for individual assistance and infrastructure repair after her earlier request following March storms was denied.  Arkansas Times
