- ➤ The University of Arkansas-Fort Smith opened its Advanced Manufacturing Lab and Workforce Development Center at the UAFS Wellness and Recreation Center in Fort Smith on May 4 to train students and workers using cutting-edge technology. - ➤ The Burnham Woods Girl Scouts campus reopened May 5 after a $1.3 million renovation that added modern spaces including a STEAM center, arts building and wood shop on its 13.5-acre site. The upgraded campus will serve over 4,500 girls with a range of programs. Southwest Times Record
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Cleanup work and environmental testing continue near 7000 U.S. 271 following Saturday's spill of about 125,000 gallons of sulfuric acid and aluminum sulfate; hazmat teams are using trucks to remove the liquid while officials plan further soil and water tests over the coming weeks. - ➤ UAFS held a BioBlitz on Monday at Ben Geren Park and is hosting one today at Creekmore Park from 9 a.m. to noon; free sessions will follow Friday at UA Fort Smith Campus Green and at Janet Huckabee Nature Center, then Saturday, letting residents document local wildlife via iNaturalist.
