  • Renovated facilities at Burnham Woods in Fort Smith will reopen on May 5 — updated cabins, classrooms, and outdoor spaces welcome Girl Scouts of all ages.  Southwest Times Record
  • The Morgan Nick Foundation held its 14th annual Everyday Heroes 5K and 1-mile walk at Fort Chaffee on Saturday morning to raise funds for programs that educate children on safety and missing persons awareness. Community members, including local educators, gathered to support the cause.  5 News
  • Arkansas announced the 2026 River Valley Farm Families of the Year by naming Clay and Nyla Parks from Van Buren for Crawford County and Nathan and Melanie Sterling from Hartford for Sebastian County + judges will visit farms and name eight District Farm Families on June 9.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Traffic was rerouted in one part of Fort Smith after a chemical spill on Saturday, May 2, when about 25,000 gallons of sulfuric acid were released on Highway 271. First responders contained the spill plus began cleanup with air monitoring and environmental testing underway.  4029 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fort Smith Public Library hosts a Star Wars film marathon on May 4 and May 5 — the original trilogy will play on May 4 while the prequels are screened on May 5 at 3201 Rogers Ave, offering popcorn, crafts and costume fun.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Starting May 7, the Fort Smith Regional Art Museum will extend hours to 7:30 p.m. on select Thursdays in May and June— giving visitors time to explore five galleries or join a figure drawing class with artist Amy Holmes Scoggins.   • The Fort Smith Symphony has announced its Dazzling Debuts season with a world premiere of Danaë Xanthe Vlasse's Mythologies on Oct. 3 at ArcBest Performing Arts Center.   • The South Sebastian County Historical Society will reopen the Old Jail Museum Complex this May in Greenwood — visitors can join spring events like the Airing of the Quilts and Family Fun Day to walk through local history and see relics from early statehood.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

  • Fort Smith Southside's Ethan Dunn won the discus and shot put while Melchilzedec Fire claimed the high jump title at Springdale Har-Ber on Thursday — each marking an important track win this season.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • The Jason Gill era begins Monday as Greenwood Bulldogs start their sanctioned spring practices following AAA rules — sessions may not exceed 20 total hours or occur on consecutive days.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
