ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Sunday night, a Barling police officer and Sebastian County deputies rescued a person who drove their car into the Arkansas River at Springhill Park and took the individual to a local hospital for treatment while officials plan to remove the submerged vehicle when conditions allow.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • A 19-year-old bicyclist from Fort Smith died on April 1 after a 2012 Chevrolet ran a green light and struck her at the Towson Avenue and South O Street intersection—police confirmed the fatal accident.  5 News

CRIME NEWS

  • The West Fork Police Department said they are searching for 16-year-old Chase Redlarczyk, who was seen at 8 a.m. Monday, April 7 walking east on Phillips Street and may be headed to Texarkana; local officials ask anyone with information to call (479-587-3555).  5 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith will host its 18th Annual Student Research Symposium from noon to 2 p.m. on April 11. UAFS students will present their research through oral, poster, music, and visual formats at Boreham Library, the Breedlove Building, and the Pendergraft Health Sciences Center.  University of Arkansas Fort Smith

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state Senate passed a bill on Monday to regulate wind energy projects in Arkansas with a 29—1 vote; the measure now goes to a committee in the state House. Bart Hester of Cave Springs sponsored the law that requires turbines to be built at a safe distance from nonparticipating landowners and tasks the Public Service Commission with setting safety and wildlife standards.  Arkansas Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • Between March 10 and March 14, inspectors reviewed many restaurants in Fort Smith and nearby areas and identified violations that could risk food safety. Several local establishments had issues such as improper food temperatures and unposted permits—while a few met all requirements.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
