CULTURE NEWS

  • Pea Ridge National Military Park preserves the site of a 1862 Civil War battle that helped decide Missouri’s fate, and visitors can explore historic trails linked to the battle and the Trail of Tears. The park offers a vivid look into important local history.  Southwest Times Record
  • The Western District, a one-act historical drama that brings Fort Smith’s 1871 court corruption to life, will open at 7 p.m. on April 9 at Prima Italia Dinner & Show Experience with follow-up shows on April 11 at Digs and April 12 at Pridgin Family Brewery.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • In Fort Smith, the Arkansas Colleges of Health Education received a $100,000 donation from the Arvest Foundation to fund its Adopt a Scholar program — which will award $25,000 per year for tuition. The check was presented Monday at the campus.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. John Boozman supports federal farm aid proposals — designed to expand crop insurance and assist Arkansas farmers facing rising costs and drought — which could help local producers stay operational this season.  Southwest Times Record

HEALTH NEWS

  • Inspections in local restaurants across Crawford and Sebastian counties found food safety violations, including temperature issues and unlabeled chemicals. Reviews from March 16 to March 20 noted problems at several Fort Smith locations (one had a bucket of defrosting sausage) while other sites had no violations.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Baptist Health in Fort Smith announced it will close its labor and delivery and obstetrics services in April, affecting about 40 employees and local families. Health leaders say the move, which stems from rising costs and fewer births, raises concerns about maternal care access and calls for new community solutions.  5 News
