CRIME NEWS

  • A Fort Smith man's trial for charges linked to the July 2024 lockdown at Mercy Hospital has been postponed to summertime—he faces allegations of impairing the operation of a vital public facility.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Arkansas at Fort Smith will host a free presentation on April 9 with Dr. Mae Jemison—NASA's first science mission specialist and first Black woman in space. The event will begin at 6 p.m. in the Reynolds Room of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center as part of the Winthrop Rockefeller Distinguished Lecturer Program and will include a question and answer session along with a book signing.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Dr. Mae Jemison, the first Black woman in space, will speak at University of Arkansas Fort Smith on April 9th at 6 p.m. in the Reynolds Room of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center (the event is free) and her talk will include a question-and-answer session and book signing (her keynote is titled 'Exploring the Frontiers of Science and Human Potential').  University of Arkansas Fort Smith

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Donald W. Reynolds Cancer Support House in Fort Smith will team with the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith dental hygiene program to offer free oral cancer screenings on April 24 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Those who sign up will be entered in a drawing for a $25 gift card—reservations require calling 4697826302.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Alma Nursing and Rehab will soon expand its assisted living center with an $8.5 million project that adds four wings to provide 60 extra beds, dialysis, two hospice rooms and a secured dementia unit with private rooms—designed to ease daily patient rejections due to limited capacity. When the project is complete, the facility will have 160 beds, making it the largest assisted living center in the state.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

  • On March 27th, the Razorbacks clashed with Texas Tech at the Chase Center in San Francisco in a Sweet 16 matchup. The Hogs, coming off an upset win over St. John's, restored Boogie Fland to action—while coach John Calipari left top scorer Adou Thiero as a game-time decision— as Texas Tech also debated returning Chance McMillian.  5 News
