CRIME NEWS

  • A Fort Smith man, John A. Bailey, 52, was arrested on March 18 in connection with a hit-and-run on March 17 at Tennessee Ridge Road that injured motorcyclist Warren Campbell who later died—he now faces a negligent homicide charge.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Fort Smith Police are asking for help finding 63-year-old John Miller, who is missing and considered endangered due to health issues and whose family needs help verifying his safety.  City of Fort Smith

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith has launched the Tuition and Mandatory Fee Guarantee which will cover the remainder of tuition and mandatory fees for eligible students after they apply for federal and state aid. The program automatically considers full-time, degree-seeking students who receive a federal Pell Grant and the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship—fall and spring fees will then be fully covered.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

  • Fort Smith installed two new right-turn-only signs at Rogers Avenue and South 66th Street on March 21 to reduce crashes—officials said the intersection saw 11 collisions over the past year and more safety projects like crosswalk upgrades and flashing beacons near schools are planned.  5 News
  • The Fort Smith Community Development Advisory Committee held public hearings Thursday for grant applicants—applicants explained the need for funds to support local community projects.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • The city approved a street closure for North 3rd between Garrison and North A—effective from 5 AM to 7 PM on March 29—for a special event— the 3rd Street Block Party hosted by Olen & Co. Market— that will affect local traffic.  City of Fort Smith

  • Recent inspections found many local restaurants did not meet key food safety rules—issues ranged from wrong food temperatures to missing food safety certificates.
