  • Local nonprofits are offering warm shelters for Fort Smith's unhoused as winter sets in today—Riverview Hope Campus, Next Step Homeless Services and the Salvation Army provide safe places to stay across the city.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Two local nonprofits received anniversary grants from the Arkansas Community Foundation before today — the River Valley Regional Food Bank earned a $50,000 Legacy Grant and Johnson County’s Forrester-Davis Development Center got a $10,000 affiliate grant — to support community efforts.  Southwest Times Record

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Fort Smith Trolley Museum is restoring historic trolley No. 224 during its slow season + the project is set to finish ahead of its 100th birthday this summer.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fort Smith will experience heavy snow, sleet and bitter cold starting Friday afternoon, with up to 8 inches forecast and road crews pre-treating key routes (including bridges and major streets) to manage travel hazards as conditions persist into next week.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders declared a weather emergency today as winter-weather storms approach the area, allocating $250,000 from the Disaster Response and Recovery Fund to support response efforts. The agency director will determine fund use while essential-supply vehicles are exempt from weigh station stops.  4029 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Baptist Health-Fort Smith is launching a free virtual Heart to Heart support group for people with heart conditions, families, and caregivers, meeting monthly on the first Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. via Google Meet (as announced in the news release).  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

  • The UAFS men's basketball team ended a three game losing streak with a 94 87 win over Newman at the Stubblefield Center today — seniors Jarren McAllister and Christian Moore led the team with 26 and 25 points respectively.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
