ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Snow is forecast beginning Friday with heavy snow and sleet hitting the River Valley late Friday night into Saturday — travel may be disrupted due to icy roads. Local crews are coordinating salt and beet juice supplies to help manage conditions as Arctic air brings single-digit temperatures and wind chills.  4029 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County Judge Chris Keith filled two Crawford County Library board vacancies by appointing Susan McCartt (Van Buren) and Mary Beth McCourt (Alma) after a Jan. 13 meeting, while the board will meet again on March 10 at Mountainburg Public Library to prepare for the Feb. 7 Fort Smith fundraiser.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • The Fort Smith Board of Directors approved the water slide installation at Parrot Island Waterpark Tuesday in a tight 4-3 vote. The nearly $2.7 million project uses funds from the general fund and parks sales tax account and will move forward despite community concerns (raised by residents during the meeting).  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Arkansas Congressman Steve Womack from Rogers released a statement yesterday on the passing of his wife, Terri Womack—married for 41 years. He said she died peacefully and thanked those who offered prayers and support.  4029 News

  • Health experts warn that expiring ACA subsidies will lead to rising premiums and longer wait times at rural hospitals. More than 153,000 Arkansans could face increased costs if lawmakers do not act — a change that may reduce care access statewide.  Southwest Times Record

  • At Grizzly Arena on Tuesday, Fort Smith Northside rallied in the fourth quarter with strong defense to beat Fort Smith Southside 66-60 after trailing for three quarters.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
