COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jay Randolph, Director of Parks and Golf, detailed new plans for trail upgrades at Bob Boyer Park and Ben Geren Park during a Monday meeting with the Sebastian County Parks Advisory Board (efforts already underway in recent months).   • Fort Smith will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend with commemorative events beginning Saturday and a parade set for Monday in downtown (celebrating his legacy).  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Neighbors gathered last Thursday evening at Ross Pendergraft Park on Garrison Avenue to remember people hurt during federal immigration enforcement operations, organized by the Alliance for Immigrant Respect and Education. The vigil lasted until 7 p.m. and honored a local citizen whose life was cut short, giving neighbors a space to reflect.  4029 News

FINANCE NEWS

  • Taxpayers in Fort Smith can expect higher standard deductions and new breaks on tip and overtime income for 2025 filings under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The IRS will begin accepting returns Jan. 26 with a deadline of April 15 + filers should prepare early.  Southwest Times Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • 9100 Jenny Lind Road will be closed for sewer improvements from Jan. 20 to Jan. 23, 2026 between 8 AM and 4 PM. The southbound lane will be shut (northbound remains open with a detour via Heather Oaks Way to Kells Abbey Road).  City of Fort Smith
  • Project Concern updated its eligibility rules so qualifying low-income residents can get discounts on water, sewer, and solid waste services. Check the 2026 income guidelines and apply on the city website (application details provided).  City of Fort Smith
