- ➤ The Fort Smith Board of Directors will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday to decide if the city will take over three cemeteries—Rose Lawn/Holy Cross, Forest Park and Washington—which hold over 55,000 graves and could cost over $900,000 to start with more than $1 million each year to run. City officials and a local nonprofit that said its model is unsustainable will review options for managing the sites. River Valley Democrat-Gazette
- ➤ The Air Force plans to expand F-35 pilot training at Ebbing ANG base by increasing jets from 24 to 36 and adding personnel and nearly 1.2 million square feet of new facilities—public hearings will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 9 at the Fort Smith Convention Center and virtually on Sept. 4 with public comments accepted until Sept. 24. - ➤ Two state senators have opposed building a 3,000-bed prison on Franklin County land since it was announced in the fall and continued to voice their concerns last week during a public meeting at the Blue Lion in Fort Smith—local residents have offered to buy the land to stop the project. - ➤ Today the Crawford County Quorum Court will start its meeting at 7 p.m. at the courthouse to consider Sheriff Daniel Perry's request for three part-time positions; the court will also vote to match more than $80,000 in grant funds for a patrol boat and equipment + additional items.
