CRIME NEWS

  • Crawford County prosecutors said they will not seek the death penalty if they prove their case against a 27-year-old man (accused in the 2023 shootings that killed two men, including his biological father) as he faces trial this week in Alma (trial beginning soon).  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Fort Smith Police are searching for missing 17-year-old Maddison Caldwell who was last seen near Valley Behavioral Health on Mayo Drive on July 8—she was wearing a black hoodie and Rick and Morty pajama pants, is about 5'6" tall, and has a history of mental health issues.  City of Fort Smith
  • Fort Smith police responded to reports of gunshots on Johnson Street Tuesday night and took a person with non-life-threatening injuries to a hospital near 5221 Johnson Street—officers continue investigating with no arrests made.  4029 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Heavy rain caused roads to flood in Fort Smith—Highway 45 and Burrow Road were affected—and emergency crews responded as the National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings for parts of the River Valley, with Sebastian County warnings lasting until noon and Sequoia County until 1 p.m. on July 8.  4029 News

  • The Fort Smith Board of Directors held its first interview with candidate Amanda Strange Tuesday in an executive session—searching for a new internal auditor. The board will hold three more interviews before making its final decision.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Fort Smith Board of Directors approved a Van Buren developer's proposal on July 8 to transform the old Fianna Hills Country Club into retirement housing, single family homes, and commercial space on a 31-acre site. Developers said the project will start in phases soon and finish in about an 18-month timeline, and Director Lee Kemp backed the plan.  5 News

  • Fort Smith's Arkansas Mavericks finished as runner-up in the 4th grade girls Division I AAU Basketball championships in Knoxville, TN—Coach Kayla Ludgood said the team gained key experience playing against top competition including the West Virginia Thunder.  5 News
