BUSINESS NEWS

  • 810 Billiards and Bowling wants to unite the Fort Smith community by offering games, mini golf, billiards, bowling, karaoke, and tasty food. The venue at 5609 Rogers Ave is open Monday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to midnight, Friday and Saturday from noon to 1 a.m., and Sunday from noon to midnight (a new spot for fun in town).  5 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fort Chaffee marked the 50th anniversary of more than 50,000 Vietnamese, Lao and Hmong refugees arriving after the fall of Saigon. The celebration featured a museum fundraiser, live music, food trucks and a fireworks show that started at 9:30 p.m. Friday to honor the enduring legacy of those early arrivals.  4029 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southside High School student Isaiah Marshall was elected by his peers at Arkansas Boys State to attend Boys Nation in Washington, D.C. He will serve as a senator for Arkansas — one of two chosen to represent the state at the national program from July 18th to 26th.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • On June 20, University of Arkansas-Fort Smith released its Spring 2025 Chancellor's and Dean's Lists, honoring students with a 4.0 grade point average on the Chancellor's List marked with an * symbol.  University of Arkansas Fort Smith
  • UAFS hosted more than 450 people on June 20 for its Mane Event new student orientation, welcoming 255 students and 200 guests—letting them tour the campus and meet faculty. Two more sessions are planned, with one on July 11 for families and another on July 25, and Lion Launch for nontraditional students will follow on August 8.  University of Arkansas Fort Smith

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced Friday that she appointed Brandon Morrison of Fort Smith to replace John Spradlin as justice of the peace in Sebastian County and Lewis Hobbs of Clarksville to fill the open seat in Johnson County following the death of Mike Jacobs—both will serve until Dec. 31.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Wes Milam—who spent 22 years with the Fort Smith Police Department—resigned Friday and will begin as director of public safety communications to lead the new River Valley Communications Center for police, fire and EMS services on Monday.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Fort Smith directors on June 17 voted to reject plans that would lower Arkoma’s wastewater rate and shift hiring control to the board, so Arkoma now pays $8.75 per thousand cubic feet and owes $149,000 in past fees. Arkoma had paid $2.69 per thousand cubic feet under an old contract—while a developer offered to pay up to $120,000 of the debt if the two sides reach an agreement.  Southwest Times Record
