CRIME NEWS

  • Prosecutors oppose John A. Bailey’s motion to have his truck returned as evidence in a March 17 hit-and-run that killed motorcyclist Warren Campbell, arguing it must remain until the case is fully resolved+ his trial is set for the week of Aug 4.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fort Smith Little Theatre is showing Girls' Weekend, a lively farce filled with secrets and slapstick humor—performances run May 29 to 31 and June 4 to 7. The play offers local audiences a fun, energetic stage experience.  Southwest Times Record

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sebastian County voters on Tuesday chose Maria Martinez (Fort Smith Zone 4), Brad Harding (Fort Smith at-large 6) and Stephen Stratton (Lavaca Position 4) in contested school board races. Voters in the Mansfield School District also rejected a millage increase that would have funded facility expansions.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Area residents will speak at a public hearing Thursday evening on a permit renewal for Denali Water Solutions LLC that would expand land application of food processing residuals near Hale Farm Road in Crawford County—where a lagoon has sometimes caused a foul odor over Fort Smith—before final decisions are made.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette
  • Fort Smith voters approved changes to two sales and use taxes—one will continue funding wastewater system upgrades while the other shifts funds from street maintenance to sewer improvements. The measure extends the taxes until 2059 and authorizes a bond issue to finance federally mandated improvements without increasing overall taxes.  4029 News
  • The Fort Smith Police Department and Sebastian County Sheriff's Office hosted a memorial service on Tuesday to honor fallen law enforcement officers in Fort Smith—attendees recited the Pledge of Allegiance and officials, including Police Chief Danny Baker and Mayor George McGill, observed the tribute.  River Valley Democrat-Gazette

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Arkansas state baseball tournament will begin May 15 with several River Valley teams—including Greenwood, Van Buren, Alma, Charleston, Booneville, Hackett and Magazine—set to compete at local venues like Burns Park and Benton Athletic Complex. Semifinals are scheduled for May 17 and championship games will follow at Bear Stadium.  Southwest Times Record
  • Several River Valley high school soccer teams are set to compete in the 2025 state championship as defending 4A champion Clarksville boys and the girls who reached the 2024 semifinals join Van Buren and Subiaco in the playoffs beginning May 15—games will continue through the finals on a date to be determined.  Southwest Times Record
