- ➤ More than 100 Joann stores closed Monday as the company began shutting down 255 locations by the end of April following its January bankruptcy filing — the Fort Smith Marketplace closed April 28 and remaining stores will shut by the end of May. 5 News
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Fort Smith man Anthony R. Harley was arrested on April 23 for possession of child sexual abuse materials and now faces a rape charge after a child under age 10 reported repeated abuse and videos of minors were found on his cellphone—he remains in custody on a $400,000 bond with his first court appearance scheduled for Wednesday. - ➤ The Sebastian County Election Commission met Monday to test voting machines and prepare ballot boxes ahead of early voting starting May 6 and the May 13 election. Voters in Fort Smith and Mansfield will cast ballots in races including a sales tax measure designed to fund improvements to the city’s wastewater system. 4029 News
- ➤ The Fort Smith Board of Directors is proposing to end mosquito repellent spraying this summer as part of $2.6 million in spending cuts that would save about $74,000 a year. City Director Neal Martin said the change will let nature take its course—homeowners can try their own spraying, and the board will vote on the proposal at a meeting on May 6. 4029 News
